Scott Speed's 25-second penalty demoted him to P11, after he had taken the chequered flag in P8. The penalty was due to Speed's having overtaken Coulthard under a yellow flag. Juan Pablo Montoya, who had likewise overtaken under a yellow flag, avoided a similar penalty: a near accident brought his car to a halt, his retirement of course making a 25-second penalty meaningless. Toro Rosso's rookie, who lost also his temper, at losing his maiden point, was yet handed an additional penalty: a $5000 fine for the use of abusive language to a driver (presumably Coulthard), during the stewards hearing.
Takuma Sato (Super Aguri) was given a reprimand by the stewards (though no concrete penalty) for having ignored blue flags. On Sato, it can be added that the Honda-powered Super Aguri driver managed to hold Rubens Barrichello, David Coulthard and Christijan Albers back for a good number of laps, up to the Japanese driver's first pit stop.
Ralf Schumacher was given a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pitlane.
Honda's Jenson Button's engine blew up at the end of the race, as he was pushing hard in order to resist Giancarlo Fisichella's attempt to overtake him. This just prevented Button from taking the chequered flag–possibly in P5, right ahead of the Italian driver. The Honda Team told Button to pull off just before the finish line, as crossing the line would have cost him an engine-change penalty, at San Marino's Qualifying.
Surprising as it might be, according to official F1 statistics, no one other than Takuma Sato and the Super Aguri Team have covered a greater distance than any other team (so far) this Season! As the laps completed by every team in the first three GP's were put together, they came out ahead of everyone else. However unexpected, these statistics seem to demonstrate that, if the Super Aguri cars have understandably been the slowest on the grid, the Team have something special to celebrate and can certainly boast about their reliability!
In the race distance covered⁄reliability context, it should not evade anyone's attention that [1] the four Honda-powered drivers were among the top eight, and [2] the two Cosworth-(V-10)-powered Toro Rosso drivers ranked 5 and 6, as far as the GP distance they have covered thus far. Renault's Fernando Alonso and Toyota's Ralf Schumacher complete the top list, ranking 3 and 4, repectively.
Regarding the V8 engines, Ferrari has appeared to be the least reliable, at the start of the Season, a situation naturaly evoked in their being outside the top eight, above.
