Familiar F1 Faces in A1 Grand Prix
Both F1 test drivers Adrian Sutil (MF1) and Neel Jani (Toro Rosso), along with F1 race driver Scott Speed (Red Bull), have taken part in A1 Grand Prix's first World Cup Season (2005-1006). These three 2006 Formula One drivers have, in fact, been in company of many other known names to F1 fans, in the A1 GP scenario:
Here are other drivers known to F1 fans, who have also raced in A1 GP's first Season: Jos Verstappen (who actually won a race, starting from the back of the grid, and received an award for the best overtaking manouvre of the Season!), Ralf Firman, Patrick Friesacher, Thomas Enge, Alex Yoong (both of whom also won an A1 GP race, the Malaysian driver additionally scoring the fastest lap's extra point in one of the A1 GP's racing weekends), Thomas Schekter, and Christian Fittipaldi (the son of Wilson Fittipaldi and nephew of double-Champion Emerson Fittipaldi, possibly the most senior of the A1 GP drivers who have been in F1 racing sometime in the past).
The sons of three F1 World Champions have also been part of A1 GP racing 2005-2006: Australian Christian Jones, Austrian Mathias Lauda, and Brazilian Nelson Ângelo Piquet (respectively, the sons of Alan Jones, Niki Lauda, and Nelson Piquet). Nelsinho Piquet (Piquet Jr.) was another driver taking the highest podium step: he won two races, in addition to earning three extra points, along the Season, by means of a racing weekend's fastest lap (i.e., out of the two races taking place during an A1 GP weekend).
F1 fans may be familiar with racing drivers who, alongside Christian Fittipaldi, are well-known names in the top US open-wheel racing scenario, and who have likewise taken part in A1 GP racing, in 2005-2006: New Zealander Scott Dixon, North American Bryan Herta, and Canadian Patrick Carpentier.
In addition to those mentioned above, British racing driver Katherine Legge, who has tested for Minardi F1, and who has just been confirmed as a 2006 seat-holder in US Champ Car (CART) Racing, has taken part in one A1 GP racing weekend, as well, as England's reserve⁄test driver.
Last, though most certainly not least, former F1 top stars and Champions Alan Jones, Emerson Fittipaldi, and John Surtees, along with former F1 Dutch driver Jan Lammers, are among the current A1 GP Team principals.
From the soccer (football) context, Brazilian striker Ronaldo and Portuguese mid-fielder Luis Figo, both of whom will be contesting the 18th World Cup (in Germany, June 2006), have likewise been involved in A1 GP, as Team co-owners.
