Both MF1's made it through to the second qualifying session for the first time, this being their best qualifying result of the Season, so far.
After Jarno Trulli's problems in qualifying–a suspension gremlin had forced him out of the car even before the first qualifying session finished–the Toyota team decided to change the rear suspension in his car, and get him to start the race from the pit lane.
Nico Rosberg, who had not had a good qualifying session, anyway–his car reportedly had no grip–ended up starting at the back of the grid, for having missed a weight check in qualifying.
Vitantonio Liuzzi had a late engine change, and so was also starting behind the two Super Aguris.
Nick Heidfeld was last in the first qualifying session, as he pulled off with mechanical trouble.
Scott Speed, in turn, qualified ahead of both Red Bulls, in P-13, his best performance of the Season. (It is true that, in Malaysia, the young American started from P-12; but that was only thanks to the many engine change penalties: Speed's original qualifying efforts had earned him a mere P-17.)
First and second corner accidents: Franck Montagny, Christian Klien, Scott Speed, Mark Webber, Nick Heidfeld, Juan Pablo Montoya, and Kimi Räikkönen were all out immediately after these accidents, whereas Jenson Button retired a couple of laps later.
Christian Klien, hit Mark Webber and Christijan Albers (first corner). Juan Pablo Montoya ran into the back team-mate Kimi Räikkönen & then touched Jenson Button, whereas Nick Heidfeld hit Jenson Button's right front tyre and was launched into the air, while Button went spinning in front of Scott Speed, who then hit Kimi Räikkönen. Frank Montagny's race also ended in this mess-up.
The pace car was of course deployed and, on the lap it pulled in (lap 6), Takuma Sato hit Tiago Monteiro in an attempt to overtake the Portuguese for 9th place. Takuma Sato was immediately out of the race, whereas Tiago Monteiro, like Button, just a few laps earlier, pit for repairs, but retired after a couple of pit stops.
Christijan Albers retired on lap 39, with a transmission problem that was likely related to his earlier accident–see above.
A wheel-bearing failure made Ralf Schumacher retire, on lap 63, when he was 5th.
Remember last year's (2005) race at Indianapolis, when only the 6 Bridgestone clad cars remained on the track, after the warm-up lap?... (All that the Michelin users did then, on race day, was that infamous parade lap, pulling to the pits before the race was flagged green.) Ironically, though there were no such tire gremlins this year, the 2006 Indy race ended up taking place with only about half of the cars that had lined up, due to multiple accidents right on the first laps–see above. Nico Rosberg, who had started from the back of the grid, was the only finisher not to score. That is to say, 9 cars finished the 2006 United States Grand Prix–admittedly, a small improvement on last year's mere 6 cars racing to the flag...
