Interesting one-page overview of Formula One racing, since 1950. For a more detailed history of F1, yet concise, and organized in small chunks which can be enjoyed one at a time, see Wikipedia.
Also at Wikipedia there is fairly detailed, overall information on the Formula One car; the same type of information (though less detailed) available at the Answers.com site. For general aerodynamics in car racing, see here. For the sake of comparison, see references to IRL & CART race cars.

Recall Mika Häkkinen's memorable overtaking there (2000): on a rainy Spa, after switching from rain tires, Mika spins and is overtaken by Michael Schumacher, who was a few seconds behind. The Finn, however, recovers spectacularly and still wins that Grand Prix! First he closes in on M.Schumacher, and then overtakes the German just as the latter driver is overlapping Ricardo Zonta. What a memorable maneuver that was! (Shorter version of the same maneuver, from a different angle and featuring Mika's own voice in reference to that remarkable episode.)

Heidfeld-Coulthard duel – Bahrein 2006
Kimi Räikkönen's last lap, Nürbürgring, 2005 (remember that the Finn surprisingly span out, handing that sure win to Fernando Alonso, as Räikkönen's car suspension finally gave in to the vibrations from his tires?)
Lap onboard Senna's car for pole (Spanish GP in Jerez).
Pre-season testing at the Barcelona circuit.
Lap onboard Ayrton Senna's car at Monaco – commented version of this same lap: Ayrton Senna's own voice and well-known words (about a strong mind's ability to push seeming limits yet further) added to the lap. This commented version is available for download elsewhere.
Ayrton Senna's 5th Monaco victory – last three laps, during which Nigel Mansell engages Senna in resisting a rousing, relentless pursuit to the final flag. (This clip is hosted at Paul's web site, where there is more Formula One content, and more on Ayrton Senna, too.)
More on the unforgettable Ayrton Senna da Silva (including some breathtaking battles of the legendary Senna-Prost rivalry!), on the page In honor of..., in this eBook .

Follow Scott Mansell, Ayrton Senna and Jackie Stewart, simultaneously, on a lap at the Brands Hatch circuit, in England. Though not currently, the Brands Hatch circuit has hosted many F1 GPs. (Incidentally, there are other racing clips at Scott Mansell's site.)
.
A breathtaking wheel to wheel battle, which made the 56th French GP (1979) truly memorable: Gilles Villeneuve and René Arnoux battle each other for over two laps, all the way to the final flag, in a most exciting fashion! The Canadian took second place in his Ferrari, a mere 24⁄100ths ahead of a then much superior turbo-charged Renault, driven by the Frenchman. (That Grand Prix was won by Jean Pierre Jabouille, in the other Renault car.) Alternative link to the same battle, which is also available for download elsewerey (version with TV narration).
You can also hear about that unforgettable battle, including an interview with Gilles Villeneuve.
For more on the unforgettable Gilles Villeneuve, pls. see the page In honor of..., in this eBook.
A three-car crash at the start of the German Grand Prix, 2003: Rubens Barrichello (who was starting from P3) found himself squeezed between Ralf Schumacher (from P2) and Kimi Räikkönen (from P5). The stewards ruled that Ralf Schumacher had been responsible for the accident and gave him a 10-place demotion penalty, on the grid, for the following race. It had initially been thought that Räikkönen had clipped Barrichello's front left wheel; but the stewards ruled that it had been R.Schumacher to make first contact, thus bumping Barrichello's Ferrari and forcing his car into Räikkönen's McLaren.
Exciting battle between Nelson Piquet & Ayrton Senna, in 1986 (British narration) – a home duel, i.e., between two Brazilian champions, this time won by Piquet – a masterful overtaking maneuver, which Jackie Stewart described as similar to making a loop with a Boeing 747. It should be noted that Piquet's car, at that time, was a bit superior to Senna's (including a more potent engine). There is a longer version of the same 1986 battle, in which Piquet's previous attempts at overtaking Senna, at that Grand Prix, can be seen (Brazilian narration). This version is available for download elsewhere – pls. note that there is no narration, just the image.
Summary⁄best moments of that GP of Hungary, 1986, from grid line-up to podium celebration – Brazilian narration. Senna, Piquet & Mansell were battling from the start (Senna was on pole, Piquet on P2, Mansell on P3, but Piquet fell to P3, at the start, though he'd overtake both Mansell & Senna, to win that GP). There were 16 retirements, that day (a few are shown). Please note that you may need to be a bit patient, before you can see the entire clip, due to its length – tip: wait to see it when you play it a second time (use the on-line link "Replay this Video") and then it will run very smoothly, from beginnig to end. Pls. note, additionally, that this collection of best moments includes Piquet's masterful overtaking, among others, but only Piquet's last and successful attempt (so this actually fails to replace the previous link to this memorable Senna-Piquet battle).
Follow, on board, one of Ayrton Senna's great Qualifying laps at the Suzuka track (1989 GP of Japan). Alternative link to the same flying lap.
Räikkönen's above-mentioned pass on Fisichella.
Cars zooming by the start lane, at the end of the first lap – 2001 GP of Japan.

In case you are not familiar with this software, the VLC player (videolan.org) is free and open source video streaming software available for Mac, Win, and other operating systems–more information. (This software installs easily, and does not mess up the computer. The version I have takes appox. 36 MB of disk space.)
