The final qualifying session has now been reduced from 20 to 15 minutes. The reason given is fuel saving.
This was the second time that the Honda team seemed to have underestimated the lap times in the qualifying sessions, thus not getting through to the next.
This was once more a pretty uneventful race (see the British GP).
However mild, some of the best excitement came from Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso. First, Felipe Massa managed to resist a fast-starting Fernando Alonso, in the first corner, and to hold the young Champion behind, till the Brazilian's third stop. Then Massa finally lost his second place to Alonso, on lap 53, as the Brazilian made his third and final stop: a mid-race change of pit strategy succeeded in minimizing the damage in the World Championship for a 2-stopping Alonso, who thus maintained, till the final flag, that second place conquered from Massa as the young Brazilian had made his final stop.
Amid the few other scenes that could be worth mentioning, Rubens Barrichello had a big moment on lap 6, losing his then P-12 to Scott Speed, who later had an off-track excursion (lap 41), though managing to keep his then P-10. (Barrichello had already retired, by that time, having come into the pits on lap 19, not to emerge back on the track.)
