Engines: V8 x V10
Compare below the new and old engines powering the F1 cars
V8 engines were introduced by the FIA in 2006, in an attempt to slow the cars down, their use imposing a power reduction of around 20% from the 3-liter engines.
Please note that the comparison below reflects rather an approximation than total accuracy, due to the secrecy with which teams keep this sort of information.
It should also be noted that the comparison that follows exhibits data regarding these engines as they were used up to and after 2005.
Restrictions have been applied to the V10 units that are still being used, in 2006, in order to make these V10s fairly 'equivalent' to the V8s, as far as performance–pls. see below the comparison chart.
This 'equivalence,' ruled by the FIA, has obviously been the target of much controversy, in 2006. Below the comparison chart are, moreover, links to a number of quotes (transcribed in this eBook) concerning this issue.
You can listen to the sound of both the V8 and the V10 engines, also below the comparison chart.

that is, limited to 16 700 rpm, and fitted with a 77 mm (3.034-inch) air inlet restrictor.
Toro Rosso's 2006 power allowance was upgraded to 17 000 rpm by the FIA, for the
Hungarian GP and remaining GPs–this extra 300 rpm, for qualifying only, though–as
a way of making up for 2006 development in the unrestricted 2.4 liter V8 units.
Though real figures are obviously difficult to obtain, some of the V8s being used
are believed to reach up to 750 hp.
All engines, whether V8 or V10, are required to last two full race weekends (as started in 2005),
or else a penalty of 10 grid positions applies.
