- The FIA will currently offer two mutually exclusive alternatives regarding development tests:
- A maximum of ten days of private testing per team between March 1st. and November 1st., evened up throughout the season with the right to enjoy intensive testing sessions, with up to three cars and three drivers (i.e., their race and spare cars and their race and test drivers, simultaneously), on the Friday preceding every Grand Prix, from 9:00 to11:00. That is to say, this bonus testing session takes place right before the official Friday practice session.
- Teams opting for testing as much as they find fit are free to do so. This choice, however, automatically excludes them from the right to use the 09.00 to 11.00 Friday practice at the start of a racing weekend, which teams accepting the ten-day limit are entitled to.

- December 15, 2002, has been set as the deadline for teams to inform the FIA of their choice of alternatives (1 or 2, above) regarding the 2002 Season. Whatever is decided by each Team by December 15 will be in force throught the 2003 Season.
- For item 1, above, to start taking effect in 2003, at least three teams must have opted for the ten-day test limit and therefore also earned the right to partake in the extra two-hour practice, at the onset of every racing weekend.
