9.2 Alternating icon libraries (for more advanced users)
(In other words, using the file <mienet_motor_racing.tpz> in alternation with TreePad's default icons file. This file has been downloaded in the package <mienet_motor_racing_tpz_library.zip>.)
- Go to the directory where you have installed TreePad (throughout the current section, we'll call this directory <TreePadDir> for ease of reference)
- Inside your <TreePadDir>, make a subdirectory called, for example, <default_tpz>
- Find in <TreePadDir> a file named <treepadlib.tpz>. This is the file where your TreePad program keeps all its icons -- i.e., the ones that are displayed, when you click the Icons-Tab. It is therefore very important to keep a safe copy of the file <treepadlib.tpz>, and even more so, if you are going to be alternating its use with other TreePad-compatible icon libraries.
- Copy the file <treepadlib.tpz> into the directory <TreePadDir\default_tpz>, which you have just created.
- Now create a new directory in the <TreePadDir>, and call it, for example, <MieNet_motor_racing_tpz>
- Unzip the contents of the file you have downloaded, <mienet_motor_racing_tpz_library.zip>, into this newly created directory, <MieNet_motor_racing_tpz>.
- Rename this file <mienet_motor_racing.tpz> as <treepadlib.tpz>.
- At this point, there are two new directories within your <TreePadDir>, each containing a file, as follows:
H-1. <TreePadDir\default_tpz\treepadlib.tpz>
H-2. <TreePadDir\MieNet_motor_racing_tpz\treepadlib.tpz>
- File Nr.1 above is the original TreePad icon library and file Nr.2 is MieNet's Motor Racing Icon library, fully compatible with the TreePad format. Please be sure always to keep H-1 and H-2, above, as safe copies!
- Having the two new directories, as described in "G," above, allows you to copy either <treepadlib.tpz> file (from H-1 or H-2) over the <treepadlib.tpz> file that must always be in your <TreePadDir>. This way, you can decide which of the two icon libraries you wish to use, before you start TreePad: the original icon library or the motor racing icon library.
- Important: please do not rewrite the file <TreePadDir\treepadlib.tpz> while TreePad is in use!
The rewriting must be done when the program is not on!
- Also important: be sure you always keep your H-1 and H-2 safe copies!
- Note: keep the originally downloaded <MieNet_motor_racing_tpz.zip> file somewhere, so you can conveniently trim the Motor Racing Icon library that you are using. This library being pretty large, it is likely to contain icons that you won't have use for.
The advantage of trimming, as just suggested, is that you allow TreePad to open faster.
Other than a small delay when it opens (to initialize the Icons Pane), TreePad suffers no drawback from the use of a large icon library, I can attest.
Now, I have not tried using TreePad with a large icon library on a very slow computer. So, if your computer is a bit on the slow side, then it should pay off to be prudent, and increase the size of the icon library little by little.
Suggestion: As you now have a safe copy of your default TreePad icon library, <treepadlib.tpz> (the file in H-1, above, is your safe copy), you can use the file <TreePadDir\treepadlib.tpz> for a bit of testing (i.e., the file used for testing will be the one standing in the main directory of your TreePad program). When the testing is over, then please remember to rewrite the file <TreePadDir\treepadlib.tpz> with your H-1 file, <TreePadDir\default_tpz\treepadlib.tpz>. (In other words, copy your H-1 file, <TreePadDir\default_tpz\treepadlib.tpz>, over the file <TreePadDir\treepadlib.tpz>, once you are through with all the testing you wish to do regarding the number of icons that you can have in the Icons Pane.)
Suggested Test: Following the procedures in All Users, add from 50 to 100 icons, each time you open TreePad. Then, the next time you open the program, first observe how fast or how slow TreePad is opening. If it has not slowed down noticeably on opening, then you repeat the first step (i.e., adding icons as explained in All Users). Then, the next time you open TreePad, again remember to observe the speed and, if all continues pretty normal, repeat the first step once more, and so forth, till you have placed in the Icons Pane the number of icons that you'd like to run the program with, as a rule. (If you intend to use the file in H-2, <TreePadDir\MieNet_motor_racing_tpz\treepadlib.tpz>, your test needs to reach 1500 icons, approximately.) Going one step at a time, as suggested, you can feel how your system performs at each change.
Note: If your system is not slow, there is no need for the above suggested test.
