In 1970, Brazil became the permanent holder of the Jules Rimet Cup,
being the first nation to win it three times.
The tournament was so named in honor of FIFA's president Jules Rimet, who served from 1921 to 1954.
The trophy depicted the "Goddess of Victory" (see above) holding an octagonal vessel in her hands raised high, over her head.
So, the current World Cup was inaugurated in West Germany, in 1974.
Note: No World Cup took place in the 1940's due to the Second World War.
The story goes that the Jules Rimet Trophy was protected from the Nazis
hidden inside a shoe box, under FIFA's vice president's bed (Dr. Ottorino Barassi).
