All Men of the Match
— Players nominated Man of the Match, match by match
– June 9 to July 9, 2006 –
Twenty-six–of the thirty-two World Cup contesting Teams–had at least one of their players elected 'Man of the Match.' These teams appear in italics, below, in the column displaying the respective matches in which these 'Men of the Match' have excelled.
The six teams missing below are
CRC,
SCG,
IRN,
CRO,
TOG, &
KSA, none having made it past the First Round, either.
On the other hand, seven Teams have played a specially outstanding role within the 'Man of the Match' contest:
GER,
ECU,
NED,
ITA,
BRA,
FRA, &
SUI. See Top Man of the Match.
Among these,
GER &
ITA have been the only Teams providing six 'Man of the Match,' each.
ITA's role has been yet more significant in that they were the only Team, among the 32 contestants, from which a player was chosen three times as 'Man of the Match'! The player receiving this single special
'Man of the Match' honor was Andrea Pirlo, who nevertheless was not elected the Golden Ball player in 2006.
Three-time 'Man of the Match' Andrea Pirlo was awarded, instead, the
Bronze Ball.
GER, in turn, managed another unique feat, this one not equaled even by
ITA: two German players were chosen twice as 'Man of the Match'!
In the remaining Teams comprising the special list just mentioned,
ECU,
NED,
BRA,
FRA, &
SUI , one of their players was chosen twice as 'Man of the Match'! See Top Man of the Match.
Curiously,
Golden Ball elected
Zidane emerged as 'Man of the Match' a single time, only–in France's match against Brazil, for the Quarter-Finals.
