ARG 1x1 MEX (regular time),
ARG 2x1 MEX (extra time–in fact, already at the end of 1st half extra time).
2 A match that grew dramatic, owing to the weakest officiating in the current World Cup (2006)–external link to brief match account.
Despite Valentín Ivanov's flashing an unprecedented number of sixteen
and four
, the Russian referee was unfortunately unable to keep a tense match under control, there being little football to enjoy, at the end of things, though plenty of delaying & other non-sporting tactics.
See goal clip.
3 Odd end of match: ITA 0 x 0 AUS up to when Spanish referee Luis Medina Cantalejo surprisingly called a very last minute and controversial penalty that rescued an exhausted and undermanned Italian side from having to endure the 30-minute extra time that looked inevitable. Italy's Fabio Grosso appeared simply to have tripped over just grounded Lucas Neill, who fell while trying to prevent a crossing.
