also took part in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.
The World Cup tragically came to an early end to Michael Owen,
after an injury on his right knee (a serious ligament rupture). Owen twisted his knee
in the first minute of the match against Sweden (England's third, in the First Round),
as he attempted to provide a pass to Ashley Cole.
England's striker had just returned to action a month before the World Cup,
after having broken his foot in December, 2005, in a match between
Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur.
Update: As the World Cup draws to a close, news on Michael Owen
report that it is unfortunately likely that he will need approximately
seven months, before he can again be fit to play.
Players who were on stand-by:
Nigel Reo-Coker (West Ham United)
Jermaine Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur)
Andrew Johnson (Crystal Palace)
Michael Dawson (Tottenham Hotspur), replacing stand-by originally listed
Luke Young (Charlton), who had to be dropped due to an ankle injury.
