Rating Criteria

The rating criteria spelled out below will be used on the pages to follow this. On these pages, the Squads playing beyond the First Round, into the knock-out phase of the World Cup, will continue being ranked, in this eBook.
Although this procedure is by no means official, it is helpful in allowing us, fans, to compare the different campaigns, up to the very last matches.
For it is not altogether uncommon for discrepancies to emerge, along the tournament. For example, in 2002, although the Spanish Squad had the second best campaign of all in the First Round (second only to the Brazilian Squad, which went on to win the World Cup that year) and had, in addition, the third best attack of all, 10 goals, the Spaniards were eliminated before the Semi-Finals.
So, as what we might refer to as logic does not always prevail (see Match-lines: Soccer x Logic...), it is interesting to see how the Squads perform relative to one another, even if they do not officially earn points, in the knock-out stages of the World Cup. And, at any rate, the Squad exhibiting the best campaign will hopefully be the one conquering the 2006 Championship, as it was in the 2002 World Cup!
Here's the criteria to be used, so as to allow a uniform rating for all teams throughout the Knock-out Stages of the World Cup:

Victories achieved by means of one or more penalty shoot-out series are really equivalent to a draw, during both regular and extra time. Thus, the attribution of a single point, in these cases – that is,
the same point-reward that is usual for a draw.
By the same token, a Squad that needs to play extra-time, in order to manage a win, has of course
been unable to derive that victory during the traditional 90 minutes. Thus this Squad should not
be rewarded with the same three points as one which did in fact win a match, within its regular 90 minutes.
The reward, in these cases, will then be 2 points, as above indicated.
On the table displaying the 2006 WC in Perspective, it should be observed, a match that had
to be decided on penalty shoot-out is counted as a draw, since these penalty series
are kicked beyond the regular and extra match times.
On the other hand, whatever result achieved by means of an extra-time period is counted
according to the score at the very final whistle, on that same page 2006 WC in Perspective.
